About

The Yallingup Surfilm Festival aims to inspire exploration into surf culture. We aim to provide passionate filmmakers & artists from around the world with a forum for sharing their creativity.

Nature guides us at YSF, our love for the ocean drives our commitment to preserve our living environment. Our aim is to use this festival to lift environmental & social awareness.

Festival Beginnings

Yallingup (Western Australia), sits in one of the most isolated parts of the world. The festival’s humble beginnings stem from a desire to celebrate the Western Australian people's intrinsic connection with the ocean and to explore new aspects of surf culture by discovering stories of human spirit and inspiration, all closely connected to surfing. From here, the desire opened up to bring diverse influences in film making, music, and art from around the world to our surf culture.  Local founder and Festival Director Jesca Maas, and a supportive surf community have worked passionately to create this inspiring festival.

Festival Overview

The Yallingup Surfilm Festival will be held over three consecutive summer nights at Madfish Wines in the Yallingup region of Southwestern Australia – under the stars at the height of summer. The festival will host inspiring independent films from around the world, live music, a historical surf culture exhibition and a visual surf art display. A gathering of filmmakers, artists, and influential ocean riders will offer perspective and anecdote. Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and talks by the filmmakers will open insights into the motivation, processes, and philosophy behind each project. Due to the high number of excellent films submitted, screenings are also held at Samudra, Dunsborough and at Yallingup Hall, Yallingup on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of January.

Film Awards

Awards for Best Feature-length Film, and Best Short Film will be presented on the closing night, Sunday 24th January 2010. The People’s Choice Award will be announced soon after the festival, in the YSF e- newsletter, Facebook and in the general media.

SurfAid Fundraising Auctions

Live auctions will be held throughout the festival to raise funds for SurfAid International.

Panellist Discussions/ Forums

A Surf Culture Forum will be held at Yallingup Hall on Saturday 23rd January, exploring surf culture; where it's been and where it's heading.

A Surf Film Makers Forum will be held on Sunday 24th January, also at Yallingup Hall, exploring new surf film making techniques and trends. All interested members of the public are invited to attend.

Volunteers

The Yallingup Surfilm Festival can not exist without its valuable volunteers. This inaugural YSF needs 40 wonderful people who would like to donate some of their time to make this festival a truly spectacular experience for all those attending and participating.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to learn about and be involved with the festival and to meet like minded people.
